Geek Shock 73 – It’s On Like Donkey #$%@

Deb and Kommander K join us because something is rotten in the state of Brick & Mortar. But, hey good things happened too, right? Like uber expensive collectables. That’s cool, right? Unless you’re buying. Then I guess it kinda sucks. Then there’s major, awesome names heading up comic properties. That’s always fine. Like when Ang Lee directed the Hulk…. um…. and let’s not forget the new lizard clones, wizard fatigue, and the fall of rhythm games. All that and a solid gold cartridge kitchen sink in this week’s Geek ShOcK!

  1. I’m pretty sure I’ve had this discussion with K already, but I thing Phil and Kaja Foglio are doing what most comics will be doing in the future regarding single issues and graphic novels. They released the first few issues of Girl Genius as traditional comic books, but soon realized that they were only going to make a profit on the graphic novels so they switched to posting it all online. They went from having a black and white comic with a few thousand readers to being a color comic with significantly more readers. They ended up reaching more folks who would by their graphic novels, t-shirts, pins and other swag. Even though you cane read the whole run online, they’re still selling more than enough to make it profitable.
